What did this part of the city look like 60 years ago.

See Slider below

Several years before the Dundas Street Bridge was built (1970), You had to detour up Front Street to the lower Bridge Street Bridge to cross the river. In the 1950's the old Simpson's Tavern building (later the Wallbridge house) still stood where Cooney Motors currently is. The Simpson's Tavern goes back nearly 200 years when Belleville was known as Myers Creek. Behind the Simpson's Tavern stood Seiberling Tire Service.

Scantlebury Home c1940 located at 80 Highland Ave. Charles Blanchard    Scantlebury 1864-1936, wife Elizabeth Vickers Osborne 1866-1939, their children Evelyn Elmina 1892-1924, Harry Francis 1894-1932, Mary Aileen 1896-1983, Helen Vickers 1904-1973, Elizabeth Marjorie 1912-unknown. The Family operated a decorating business with locations in Belleville, Kingston and Winnipeg. The home was sold by the Scantlebury Estate 1940 after the death of his wife, Elizabeth.

John R Bush purchased the home and moved his Funeral Home from it's Campbell Street location in 1954. John R Bush sold the Funeral Home to the Rushnell family in 1973. As you can see, many renovations and additions have been made over the years.

If you look closely, you will see the highway 2 marker at right of picture. Highland Ave used to directly connect highway 2 (Dundas Street).
